There are a lot of chinese shocks on the market, and not all of them are very good. MDI branded shocks are some of the best of these economy shocks. They are traditional hydraulic emulsion shocks and work well for ordinary green laning and trail riding. As you'd expect, at this price they won't last very long over jumps or heavy duty use!

The all chrome 345mm trail shocks are designed for bikes up to 250cc. Primary application is for the Honda SL125.

The all chrome 400mm shocks designed for general trail / green laning use on many bikes 125-400cc. They have been used successfully on Honda XL250 and also on Suzuki SP370 when increased ride height is needed. Springs are straight cut and can be chrome as pictured or red as a no-cost option. Spring rating is around 100lb-in and available travel is 115mm max.

Both types have adjustable preload (C-spanner required, £3 extra), and we will fit the correct bushes for your application before despatch, all in the price.

Betor's ranges of off-road shocks are some of our best sellers. Including various MX/Enduro and Trials shocks, they are well made, perform well, last well and are very reasonably priced.

The MX range are good quality gas shocks designed for Motocross / Enduro use, but also suitable for general mixed trail, green-laning and road use. Available in 340mm, 360mm, 390mm, 400mm and 410mm lengths. They have 105mm max travel, 6-position preload adjustment via circlips, 12mm rods, and are supplied with progressive springs rated 80/150 lbs. Bushes are fitted with 12mm steel sleeves. These can be pushed out if you need 14mm, or we can supply steel inserts to reduce the hole size to 10 or 8mm. Weight is around 2.8kg the pair. Rebuildable, and fitted with schrader valves for you to set your own pressure if you have nitrogen available!!

If you're new to trials the Betor steel range is ideal. Made in Spain originally for Bultacos, they cover most bikes and rider weights with choices of damper length and spring rate. And they're good enough that you probably won't bother to upgrade them as you improve - look around at the next meet, probably 50% of the bikes will be using these shocks!

On the right are Alloy Pro's, the latest version of the old favourite. The steel bodies are chromed, and fitted with aluminium end pieces to save weight - only 200 grams saved, but it all counts!!. Redesigned internally as well, they are excellent. Plus the preload adjustment is now via threaded body rather than circlip, and the lower bushes are semi-conical to allow more freedom of movement. Available in 320mm, 340mm, 350mm, 360mm, 380mm & 400mm length with a choice of either 40lb or 50 lb starting spring rates, although the springs are progressive and end up at around 80/90lb. They have the same long 105mm travel and 12mm rod. Bushes are fitted with 12mm steel sleeves. We can supply steel inserts to reduce the hole size to 10 or 8mm. Weight is around 2.3kg the pair. They can be fitted upside down if required.

They are rebuildable - If you've worn out your steel or aluminium PRO shocks then this repair kit might be for you. It's a straightforward screw-in replacement for either, and comprises new 12mm shaft together with seals, damping control discs etc. It fits both 340mm and 360mm shocks.

And if you want the best, take a look at these PRO-ELITE trials shocks. They have the same style and finish of the Alloy Pro's, and the same 35mm od dampers, but with two important changes which make all the difference. First, they have ADJUSTABLE DAMPING - via 20 clicks of the slotted screw set into the top mounting - enabling you to find the setup that perfectly suits your weight and the terrain, and vary it for different conditions. Second, instead of the 12mm rod that's standard on the Steel and Alloy Pro shocks, these Pro-Elite lovelies have a beefed up 14mm rod fitted for extra strength and positional stability.

Available in 340 / 350 / 360 / 370 / 380 / 390 and 400mm length with the usual choice of 40lb, 50lb or 65lb starting rate springs. Also now available at 300mm long, but only with 65lb springs. Not cheap but the good stuff never is.

Hagon have been involved with all types of off road motorcycle sports for many years. Alf Hagon, who started the business back in the 1950s built race-winning bikes and was very successfully involved with speedway, grasstrack, and drag racing. Alf was actually the first Brit to break 200mph on two wheels, in 1967. The company is still very involved with off-road, amongst other things they sponsor speedway events, riders and training schemes.

For trials and MX / Enduro use Hagon make a range of bike-specific single-spring shocks. They are steel bodied 28mm gas pressurised dampers with separator pistons, have 100mm travel, and are pre-65 eligible. 3-position enclosed cam preload adjusters and run rod down. Available lengths are 330 / 340 / 350 / 360mm. Springs are black, rates 12kg to 20 kg. Although not rebuildable (the dampers are crimp-sealed around the shaft), they come with adjusting spanner and a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.

For more general trail riding, mixed on-road/off road, green laning etc Hagon make a range of twin-spring shocks. Black painted 28mm sealed damper units featuring 2-coupled springs for faster rising action plus long stroke piston rod with 110mm travel. 3-postion spring pre-load adjustment by enclosed cam. The shorter spring is always black, but the main spring can be chromed for a small extra payment. Available lengths are 370 / 390 / 420mm. Supplied as complete bike-specific pair with mounting bushes and spring adjusting C spanner. These units are designed to be fitted with the piston rod at the bottom. 2-year guarantee.

Hagon also make a wide range of monoshocks for off-road bikes. Their shock for the Honda CRF250L (2012-on) is very popular, giving a much better and more supportive ride than the OEM shock. Both preload and combined compression/rebound damping adjustment are standard. They come with a 2-year warranty and are ready to fit.

All Hagon twinshocks are built to order with springs and damping calculated to match your weight on the bike. Non-standard length shocks are also available, if you need reduced seat height to get your feet on the ground, or maybe want a taller ride. There's a £20/pair extra charge for non-standard length shocks.

Shocks for monoshock off-roaders are not too well served by aftermarket manufacturers, probably because the bike models seem to change more often, so production numbers are smaller. And the shocks take more of a battering! YSS are already making quite a name for themselves in off road applications as well as street bikes. For example, we sell at lot of MZ366's for Honda CRF230 (2003-on), where the adjustable damping is a big improvement on the original shock.
